Chandigarh, Mar 28: Congress MP Manish Tewari on Saturday voiced concern over the escalating conflict in the Gulf, warning that it is beginning to affect India’s economic and energy security. Speaking to the media, Tewari highlighted the urgent need to de-escalate tensions and ensure the reopening of the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz.

He pointed to the hardships faced by citizens, particularly in rural areas, where LPG shortages have worsened and cylinder supplies can be delayed for up to 45 days. Tewari also raised alarms about rising fuel prices, citing increases by Nayara Energy, and suggested that government efforts to maintain price stability may be politically timed ahead of the West Bengal elections.

On the diplomatic front, he questioned the effectiveness of current measures, noting that Iran has consistently indicated limited engagement in meaningful mediation. Tewari stressed that resolving the Gulf conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz is critical, as nearly 3,000 ships remain stranded, disrupting trade and supply chains. He also highlighted that the crisis extends beyond crude oil and LNG to include disruptions in fertiliser supplies.

Meanwhile, Iran has allowed safe passage for Indian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, with Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi describing India as a “friendly” nation whose ships will not face restrictions despite ongoing regional tensions.
