Nitish Kumar likely to quit Bihar Council after RS win

Daijiworld Media Network - Patna

Patna, Mar 27: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is expected to step down from the Legislative Council on March 30 following his recent election to the Rajya Sabha, sources said.

Kumar, who won the Rajya Sabha election on March 16, is required under constitutional provisions to relinquish one of the two memberships within 14 days, as an individual cannot simultaneously be a member of two Houses.

With both the Bihar Assembly and Legislative Council currently in recess until March 29, it is anticipated that he will formally submit his resignation as a Member of the Legislative Council when the Houses reconvene on March 30. Sources indicated that the decision is nearly final in view of the constitutional mandate.

Kumar, the longest-serving chief minister of the state, was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar earlier this month. Elections were held for 11 seats across Bihar, Odisha and Haryana out of 37 vacancies, while the remaining members were elected unopposed.

Following his victory, Kumar expressed gratitude to the people of Bihar for their continued support over more than two decades, stating that their trust had enabled him to serve the state with dedication and contribute to its development and dignity.

He also recently took over as the president of the Janata Dal (United) after being elected unopposed. The announcement was made by returning officer Aneel Prasad Hegde, who handed over the certificate to party leaders including Sanjay Kumar Jha and Union minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh at the party’s central office in New Delhi.
