Govt assures ample fuel supplies, dismisses panic over misinformation

New Delhi, Mar 26: In New Delhi, the government on Thursday firmly stated that India’s petroleum and LPG supply remains stable and well under control, urging citizens to ignore what it described as a coordinated misinformation campaign aimed at creating unnecessary panic.

The Ministry of Petroleum clarified that the country currently has around 60 days of fuel stock, with a total reserve capacity of 74 days, even as global tensions—particularly in the Middle East—continue. Officials emphasised that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG anywhere in India, and supplies remain steady across all retail outlets.

The government also highlighted that crude oil procurement for the next two months has already been secured, ensuring uninterrupted availability regardless of international developments. It dismissed claims about dwindling reserves as misleading and unfounded.

While several countries are reportedly grappling with fuel shortages, rationing, and emergency measures, India has not found it necessary to impose any such restrictions. Authorities noted that isolated cases of panic buying at certain fuel stations were triggered by misleading content circulating on social media.

To maintain smooth supply, oil companies have extended credit limits to petrol pump operators and ensured continuous operations at depots, even overnight, to meet demand surges.

Despite concerns around the Strait of Hormuz, India continues to source crude oil from a diverse network of more than 40 global suppliers. Refineries across the country are operating at over full capacity, with no anticipated supply gaps.
On the LPG front, domestic production has been significantly increased, now meeting a major portion of daily demand.

Imports have also been secured, with large shipments already on the way from multiple countries, ensuring consistent availability. Officials confirmed that millions of LPG cylinders are being delivered daily, with additional measures in place to prevent hoarding and black marketing.

The government also reiterated its push for piped natural gas (PNG), describing it as a cost-effective, cleaner, and safer alternative. It clarified that the promotion of PNG is part of a long-term energy strategy and not due to any shortage of LPG.

Citizens have been advised to rely only on official government updates for accurate information and to avoid being influenced by unverified claims regarding fuel availability.
