New Delhi, Mar 23: With rising temperatures, fitness experts have cautioned gym-goers against the risk of overheating during intense workouts, stressing the importance of proper precautions to ensure safe exercise.
According to Dr Indramani Upadhyay, overheating occurs when the body generates more heat than it can release, leading to fatigue, dizziness, dehydration and muscle cramps. In severe cases, it may even result in heat exhaustion or stroke.
He noted that while physical activity is essential for maintaining overall health, exercising in hot conditions without adequate care can put significant stress on the body.

Overheating is commonly caused by high-intensity workouts without sufficient breaks, poor hydration, inadequate ventilation, and wearing heavy or non-breathable clothing. Lack of proper warm-up and cool-down routines can further increase the risk.
Experts emphasise that maintaining proper hydration is crucial, as drinking water before, during and after exercise helps regulate body temperature and replenish fluids lost through sweating. Electrolytes may also be beneficial during intense sessions.
Wearing lightweight, breathable and moisture-wicking clothing is recommended to allow sweat to evaporate efficiently and keep the body cool.
Fitness specialists also advise incorporating gradual warm-up routines to prepare the body for exercise and reduce sudden spikes in temperature. Short rest intervals between workout sets can help the body recover and prevent excessive heat buildup.
Exercising in well-ventilated spaces with adequate airflow or cooling systems is equally important to maintain comfort and performance.
Concluding the session with an effective cool-down routine, including light movements and stretching, helps lower heart rate, improve circulation and aid recovery.
Experts underline that simple precautions can help individuals continue their fitness routines safely even during the summer months.
