Jaipur, Mar 14: Ladakh-based climate activist and engineer Sonam Wangchuk was released from Jodhpur Central Jail on Saturday after the Central Government revoked the charges filed against him under the National Security Act (NSA). The preventive detention order was formally withdrawn earlier in the day, paving the way for his release.
Wangchuk was freed following the completion of legal and administrative formalities. His wife, Gitanjali Wangchuk, arrived at the jail around 10:00 AM to receive him and assist with the paperwork. The couple left the premises together in a private vehicle at approximately 1:00–1:15 PM, though the jail authorities did not provide details of Wangchuk’s immediate travel plans.

The engineer and activist had been detained under the NSA after unrest erupted in Leh on September 24, 2025, during a hunger strike he led. Authorities took him into custody two days later, on September 26, and transferred him to Jodhpur Central Jail. Wangchuk had spent 170 days in preventive detention before his release.
Widely recognized for his work in sustainable education and environmental innovation in Ladakh, Wangchuk has been a prominent voice on regional and social issues. His detention had drawn nationwide attention and concern from civil society groups and supporters.
With the withdrawal of NSA charges, Wangchuk’s release marks a major development in a case that had attracted significant national scrutiny.
