Mumbai, Mar 10: Politician, author and poet Jishnu Dev Varma was sworn in as the 22nd Governor of Maharashtra on Tuesday at a ceremony held at the Darbar Hall of Maharashtra Lok Bhavan in Mumbai.
Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, administered the oath of office to Varma in the presence of several dignitaries.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar congratulated the newly appointed Governor by presenting bouquets. Following the swearing-in ceremony, the Indian Navy accorded him a ceremonial guard of honour.

The ceremony was attended by Varma’s wife Sudha Dev Varma and other family members, along with several political leaders and senior officials. Among those present were Chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council Ram Shinde, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Rahul Narwekar, Deputy Chairperson of the Legislative Council Neelam Gorhe, and ministers Chhagan Bhujbal, Chandrakant Patil, Mangal Prabhat Lodha and Narhari Zirwal. Former chief minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Mumbai mayor Ritu Tawde, Director General of Police Sadanand Date and other officials also attended the event.
Earlier, Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal read out the warrant of appointment issued by President Droupadi Murmu regarding Varma’s appointment as Governor in Hindi and English.
Before taking charge in Maharashtra, Varma had been serving as the Governor of Telangana since July 3, 2024.
A member of the Manikya royal dynasty of Tripura, Varma served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura from 2018 to 2023, holding key portfolios including finance, rural development and power.
Apart from politics, he has a keen interest in modern art, painting and sculpture. Varma was also the convener of the Tripura chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and coordinated the organisation’s activities across Northeast India. He is also known as a writer and poet.
