Sonepat, Mar 10: Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday attended the wedding of a farmer’s daughter in Madina village of Haryana’s Sonepat district, three years after his earlier visit to the same village.
Gandhi, accompanied by Rohtak Member of Parliament Deepender Singh Hooda, reached the village and was accorded a traditional welcome. Farmer Sanjay and local residents tied a ceremonial white turban (pagri) on his head before he joined the wedding ceremony.
The Congress leader stayed for nearly an hour at the function, participating in the marriage of Tanu, the daughter of farmer Sanjay. He blessed the bride and presented a gift and traditional ‘shagun’.

During the visit, Gandhi interacted with family members and villagers about Haryanvi wedding customs. He also tasted traditional sweets and had milk ‘choorma’.
According to party leaders, Sanjay and the village sarpanch had travelled to Delhi on February 25 to personally invite Gandhi to the wedding.
Villagers expressed excitement over Gandhi attending the ceremony of an ordinary farmer’s daughter, a Congress leader said.
Gandhi had earlier visited Madina village on July 8, 2023, where he interacted with farmers and agricultural labourers. During that visit, he joined farmers in sowing paddy by entering water-filled fields after rolling up his trousers. He had also driven a tractor while ploughing the field.
Following that visit, Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had hosted Sanjay and a group of farmers from the village for lunch at their residence in Delhi.
