Mangaluru, Feb 28: St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) organised National Science Day with the theme: ‘Women in Science – Catalysing Vikasit Bharat’ on February 27 in LCRI Hall of the University.
Prof Jayakara Bhandary, principal and professor of Botany, Dr P Dayananda Pai - P Sathisha Pai Govt First Grade College, was the chief guest. Prof Vidya Shetty, professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, NITK, Surathkal, was the guest of honour. Dr Praveen Martis, SJ, vice chancellor, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), presided over the programme. Dr Melwyn D’Cunha, SJ, pro VC of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Dr Ronald Nazareth, registrar of the University, Dr Ruban S, dean of Engineering, Dr Aruna Kalkura T, director, Xavier Block, Dr Asha Abraham, director of LCRI block, Dr Jyothi Miranda, convener of the programme, Dr Geetha Pinto, co-convenor, Dr Renita Maria D’Souza, dean of Life Sciences, were on the dais.


































Prof Jayakara Bhandary in his speech emphasized the role of scientific temper and research culture among the students. He also spoke on encouraging women to take up the leadership in scientific fields.
Prof Vidya Shetty addressed the gathering on the theme of the National Science Day and reminisced the discoveries of Sir CV Raman. She also spoke on the various contributions of women in STEM.
Dr Praveen Martis SJ, in his address, elaborated on Raman Spectroscopy which has a wide range of applications in chemistry, physics, and medicine today. He also remembered late Dr Leo D’Souza SJ, and his various scientific accomplishments.
Dr Ronald Nazareth spoke about the importance of passion and curiosity in research and emphasized the need for innovation among students.
During the programme, a heartfelt tribute was paid to the world-renowned scientist and the former principal of St Aloysius College, late Dr Leo D’Souza SJ, who passed away recently. Dr Shashikiran Nivas, research co-ordinator, Laboratory of Applied Biology, spoke about late Dr Leo D’Souza SJ and a memorial video was played in his honour.
Akshitha, assistant professor, compered the programme. Dr Jyothi Miranda, professor, Department of Botany welcomed the gathering. Dr Geetha Pinto, associate dean, proposed the vote of thanks.
