Chhattisgarh couple end lives after losing only son

Dhardei, Feb 17: A pall of gloom descended on Dhardei village in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir-Champa district after a couple was found dead in their courtyard on Monday morning, reportedly unable to cope with the loss of their only son.

Krishna Patel (48) and his wife Rama Bai (47) were found hanging from a neem tree inside their home premises under the jurisdiction of Shivrinarayan police station. Police officials said preliminary investigation indicates death by suicide.

A four-page suicide note was recovered from Krishna’s pocket. In the note, the couple cited the accidental death of their 21-year-old son, Aditya Patel, last year as the sole reason for their extreme step.

Describing their son as “the foundation of our life, our entire world — not just a son, but a friend who listened to everything,” Krishna wrote that they were “alive, but not living” after his death. The couple said that even after a year, the grief had not subsided.

The note also reflected their spiritual thoughts. Krishna wrote that he felt drawn towards God and that they were willingly offering themselves to Lord Shiva. The couple stated that no one should be held responsible for their decision and urged family members not to grieve.

Police said the couple had also recorded a video message before taking the step. In it, they reportedly requested their lawyer to ensure that compensation received following Aditya’s accident be transferred to Krishna’s elder brothers.

Aditya Patel had died in a road accident in the Masturi police station area in 2024. Krishna, a mason, and Rama Bai, a homemaker, were deeply affected by the tragedy, locals said.

Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.
