Disaster management awareness programme held at SMVITM with NDRF participation

Udupi, Feb 16: A Disaster Management – NDRF Familiarization-cum-Community Awareness Programme (FAMEX–2026) was organized at Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM) in collaboration with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) 10 Battalion and the Udupi District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) to enhance disaster preparedness and community awareness.

The program aimed to create awareness among students and the community about disaster preparedness, emergency response, and life-saving techniques during natural calamities. Officials highlighted the importance of timely action, coordination, and public participation in minimizing disaster risks.

Addressing the gathering, the principal Dr Nagaraj Bhat emphasized that educational institutions play a vital role in building a culture of safety and preparedness among youth. He encouraged students to actively participate in such training programs and become responsible citizens capable of responding effectively during disasters.

Ravi, district disaster management professional from the deputy commissioner’s office, Udupi, also addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of preparedness and coordinated action during disasters. Sub-inspector Mr Munnikrishnan and Lecturer Yellappa were present during the program and extended their support.

NDRF personnel, led by team command, Ajay Kumar, 10th battalion RRC Bengaluru, conducted practical demonstrations on rescue operations, first-aid procedures, evacuation techniques, and the use of modern disaster-response equipment. The live demonstrations helped participants understand practical methods to handle emergencies such as floods, fires, and earthquakes. Resource persons further stressed that awareness and regular training are essential to save lives and reduce losses during emergencies. Faculty members, more than 500 students, and staff actively participated in the sessions and interacted with the experts.

The event strengthened coordination between educational institutions and disaster management authorities, encouraging youth to contribute responsibly to community safety.

Dr Deepika B V, student welfare officer at SMVITM compered the programme. The programme was organized by the IQAC of SMVITM, under the guidance and coordination of Dr Subbulakshmi N Karanth.
