Bhadohi, Feb 15: Police have registered a case against the husband and in-laws of a two-month pregnant woman for allegedly assaulting her with the intent to cause a miscarriage following repeated harassment over dowry demands, officials said on Sunday.
According to police, a complaint was lodged by Taslima against her husband Riaz Ahmed, father-in-law Mumtaz, mother-in-law Shakeela, brother-in-law Imteyaz and sister-in-law Sakreen Bano at Aurai police station on Saturday.

The case has been registered under Sections 85, 115 and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
Police raided the accused’s residence at Tarkapur Pokhari in Mirzapur district, but all of them were found absconding. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest the accused, an official said.
Aurai Station House Officer Manoj Kumar said Taslima, a resident of Peepartar Kaithan Mohalla under Aurai police limits, was married to Riaz Ahmed of Mirzapur in June 2022. Soon after the wedding, her husband and in-laws allegedly began demanding Rs 2 lakh in cash and a piece of land as dowry.
When she expressed her inability to meet the demands due to her parents’ financial condition, she was allegedly subjected to cruelty and physical violence.
According to the complaint, on the midnight of December 22, 2025, Taslima was allegedly thrown out of the house in the cold by her husband and in-laws.
The SHO said that after intervention by relatives, her husband took her back on February 2, 2026. However, upon learning that she was two months pregnant, he allegedly refused to accept her unless the dowry demands were fulfilled.
Three days later, on February 5, she was allegedly brutally assaulted by her husband and mother-in-law, while her brother-in-law repeatedly kicked her in the abdomen with the alleged intention of causing a miscarriage.
The husband also allegedly attempted to strangulate her, but her cries alerted neighbours who rushed to her rescue, police said.
Neighbours admitted her to a hospital and informed her parents. Her father later brought her to Bhadohi where she received treatment at a private hospital. Her condition is stated to be stable.
Police said further investigation is underway and search operations are continuing to apprehend the accused.
