63-year-old scooterist killed in hit-and-run near Manimajra underbridge

Chandigarh, Feb 15: A 63-year-old man died after being hit by a speeding car in a suspected hit-and-run case near the Manimajra underbridge here, with the accused driver fleeing the spot. The victim’s family has alleged police negligence and demanded his immediate arrest.

The deceased was identified as Gulshan Kumar, a resident of Manimajra. According to his son Himanshu, Kumar worked at the Sector 26 Mandi and had left home around 4 am as part of his daily routine. At around 10 am, while returning home on his scooter, he was allegedly struck from behind by a speeding car near the underbridge.

The impact threw him onto the road divider. Though he was wearing a helmet, he sustained critical injuries and lost consciousness at the scene.

A passerby alerted the police control room, following which a PCR team rushed him to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Himanshu alleged that despite repeated inquiries, the police have not shared any concrete update regarding the accused driver. He said the family has been urging authorities to act swiftly and arrest the culprit.

Police officials at Manimajra police station said investigations are underway. They are scanning CCTV footage from nearby cameras and questioning eyewitnesses present at the time of the accident to identify and trace the driver.
