Ambedkarnagar, Feb 15: In a shocking case of medical negligence, two men with no recognised medical qualifications have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkarnagar for allegedly performing a caesarean section at an unregistered hospital, leading to the death of a 28-year-old pregnant woman.
Police said the accused, Yogesh Verma (32), an arts graduate from Malipur, and Shubham Vishwakarma (19), a Class 12 student from Sultanpur, were illegally conducting surgeries at Navjeevan Hospital in Bukhiya village under the Baskhari Bazaar police station limits.

According to officials, the victim Priyanka, wife of Sandeep Kumar Verma, was admitted to the facility on February 5 for delivery. The two accused allegedly performed a caesarean operation, after which she developed severe bleeding complications. As her condition worsened, she was referred first to a hospital in Akbarpur and later to Lucknow, but she died while being shifted.
Following protests by the victim’s family, the hospital operator, identified as Ruby, reportedly fled. Authorities sealed the hospital on February 8, and an FIR was registered a day later based on a complaint filed by Dr Ajay, Superintendent of the Baskhari Community Health Centre.
Investigations revealed that Yogesh Verma had gained basic medical exposure while assisting his father, Bhagwandas, a retired ward boy who earlier worked at the Jalalpur CHC. Police suspect Verma had been carrying out such procedures for years at different centres. Shubham Vishwakarma was allegedly assisting him, while Shubham’s father, Vijay Vishwakarma, runs a nursing home in Sultanpur district.
Ambedkarnagar Chief Medical Officer Dr Sanjay Kumar Shaiwal has ordered verification of all medical credentials linked to Navjeevan Hospital and assured strict action against those responsible.
Meanwhile, amid growing concern over maternal deaths in both government and private hospitals, Ambedkarnagar District Magistrate Anupam Shukla has constituted a probe committee to document maternal deaths reported since April 2025. Officials said action will be taken against those found guilty of negligence or dereliction of duty.
