Mangaluru, Feb 14: The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Yenepoya Dental College, a constituent unit of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), celebrated International Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Day on February 13th with great enthusiasm and academic spirit.
The programme commenced with a tribute to the late maxillofacial surgeon Dr Senthil Murugan, who passed away on January 27. A minute of silence was observed, and heartfelt condolences were offered by the faculty and dignitaries in honour of his contributions to the specialty.



Dr Jagadish Chandra, head of the department and organising chairman, welcomed the gathering. The event was graced by pro vice chancellor and eminent maxillofacial surgeon Prof Dr B H Shripathi Rao as guest of honour and registrar Dr Aswini Dutt as chief guest. Dr Joyce Sequiera, organising secretary, introduced senior maxillofacial surgeon and academician Prof Dr B Rajendra Prasad, who was felicitated for his invaluable contributions to the field.
The function was presided over by principal Dr Laxmikanth Chatra. The dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Dr Sham S Bhat, and the vice-principal, Dr M Hasan Sarfaraz, were also present along with heads of departments and faculty members.
The dignitaries emphasized the evolving scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, innovations in surgical techniques, and the importance of ethical, patient-centred and interdisciplinary collaborative care. Dr Varsha Upadya highlighted the clinical spectrum of the specialty and showcased recent collaborative work undertaken with other departments.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Akshatha Kaniyoor. The celebration reflected the department’s continued commitment to academic excellence, surgical innovation, and holistic professional development.
