Priyanka Gandhi slams US trade deal, questions Modi government on farmer interests

New Delhi, Feb 3: Congress general secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday accused the Centre of jeopardising Indian farmers’ interests by allegedly accepting a trade deal with the United States that favours American producers.

In a social media post, she highlighted that “American farmers' products will now be sold in the Indian market, bringing money to rural America,” claiming that the deal benefits the US while leaving Indian farmers uncertain about its implications. She demanded clarity on whether the government plans to fully open India’s agricultural sector to American imports and questioned if Indian farmers will be forced into direct competition with US companies.

Priyanka Gandhi also shared a video clip of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly delegating responsibility on the trade agreement. “The leader of the country is supposed to give direction. The leader of the country is not supposed to run away from decisions and leave decisions to other people's shoulders. That is what the Prime Minister has done,” Rahul Gandhi said in the clip.

Former union minister Jairam Ramesh, too, raised concerns over the fairness of the deal, suggesting that India may have accepted terms dictated by the US. He pointed out that US President Trump had announced the agreement and claimed it was being done “on Modi’s request.” Ramesh warned that proposed tariff reductions and elimination of non-tariff barriers could fully open India’s market to American goods, potentially affecting farmers, traders, and domestic industry.

Ramesh urged the government to provide full details of the deal in Parliament and assure that the security and economic interests of Indian farmers are protected. The Congress has called for immediate clarification on the terms and impact of the agreement before any further implementation.
