Kolkata, Feb 3: In a chilling display of vigilante justice, a 32-year-old man who was both deaf and mute, Ashik Mondal, lost his life after being subjected to a series of horrific physical assaults in the Panihati area of North 24 Parganas.
The incident was triggered by a mere suspicion of theft, which led a local family to take the law into their own hands with devastating cruelty.
Police reports and local accounts suggest that Mondal was not only brutally beaten by the accused, Bachchu Barua and his family, but was also subjected to unimaginable torture, including being scalded with boiling water and forced to ingest acid.

The severity of the injuries left Mondal in critical condition, and despite being rushed to Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital by concerned neighbors, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday night.
The news of his passing has ignited a wave of fury throughout the community, as residents demand justice for a man who was unable to defend himself or speak out against his attackers.
Mondal’s niece expressed the family’s heartbreak, questioning why the neighbors didn't approach them if there were grievances instead of resorting to such inhumane violence.
Local political leaders have also condemned the act as a "heinous crime," calling for the maximum penalty for those responsible.
While two suspects have been apprehended, a manhunt is currently active to capture the remaining family members who fled following the assault.
