Deoria, Feb 2: Three youths allegedly gained the trust of a minor boy and swindled jewellery worth around Rs 85 lac from his family by luring him with momos, police said on Monday.

An FIR has been registered at Rampur Karkhana police station in Deoria district after the boy’s father alleged that the accused, who run a momo stall at Dumri Chauraha on the Deoria–Kasya road, fled with the valuables.

According to police, the incident came to light when the boy’s sister asked for her jewellery. On checking the almirah, the family found all the ornaments missing. When questioned, the Class 7 student told his shocked family members that he had handed over the jewellery to the momo sellers in exchange for food.

Rampur Karkhana SHO Devendra Kumar Singh said the case was registered on the complaint of Vimlesh Mishra, the boy’s father, who is a temple priest posted in Varanasi. Mishra stated that his son lives in the village for studies.

“The accused youths befriended the boy and gradually gained his confidence. They allegedly offered him momos, following which he took jewellery belonging to himself and his sister from the house and gave it to them,” the SHO said.

Police said efforts are under way to trace the absconding accused and a detailed investigation is in progress.
