Mumbai, Jan 30: Filmmakers behind S.S. Rajamouli’s upcoming action-adventure epic “Varanasi” have revealed the strategy behind the film’s April 7, 2027 release date and its marketing campaign, which began with a cryptic installation in the titular city.

Produced under Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business, the project is backed by producers K.L. Narayana and S.S. Karthikeya. Speaking to Variety, Karthikeya said, “Varanasi lies at the heart of this film, so beginning the release conversation from the city itself felt instinctive. The cryptic on-ground installation was intended to spark curiosity, and audiences connected the dots organically.”

The release date has been carefully chosen to coincide with major Indian festivals and holidays, ensuring a strong theatrical window. “April 7, 2027, sits within the festive period of Ugadi and Gudi Padwa, flows into the weekend, and is followed by Ambedkar Jayanti and Rama Navami, creating a strong extended theatrical window,” Karthikeya explained.

Set across thousands of years and multiple continents, the film features locations ranging from Antarctica and Africa to Varanasi. A key sequence draws inspiration from the Ramayana, linking to the Rama Navami festival, which celebrates Lord Rama’s birth.

Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu leads the cast alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran.

Following the global success of Rajamouli’s RRR in 2022—widely acclaimed and the fifth-highest grossing Indian film ever—the director reunites with Oscar-winning composer MM Keeravani, who won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Naatu Naatu” from RRR.

“Varanasi” is shaping up as one of the most anticipated Indian films, combining epic storytelling, star power, and festival-timed release to maximise audience engagement.
