India, Bangladesh exchange fishermen in humanitarian gesture

New Delhi, Jan 30: Bangladesh on Thursday repatriated 23 Indian fishermen, while India released 128 Bangladeshi fishermen in a mutually coordinated exchange, reflecting humanitarian and livelihood concerns of fishing communities on both sides.

According to an official readout from India’s external affairs ministry, the exchange was finalised keeping in mind the welfare of fishermen who had inadvertently crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line and were subsequently detained by authorities in the neighbouring country.

“Indian fishermen who had accidentally crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line were arrested by Bangladesh authorities recently. Similarly, Bangladeshi fishermen were apprehended by Indian authorities,” the ministry said.

It added that both governments successfully completed the release and repatriation of all 23 Indian fishermen and 128 Bangladeshi fishermen, along with their operable fishing vessels, on Thursday.

The external affairs ministry said the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh closely monitored the wellbeing of the detained Indian fishermen during their incarceration, providing them with warm jackets and ensuring access to essential items.

“The government of India attaches the highest importance to the safety, security and welfare of Indian fishermen,” the ministry said.
