Suicide blast at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa wedding kills seven, injures 25

Islamabad, Jan 24: At least seven people were killed and 25 others injured when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest during a wedding ceremony in northwest Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday.

The attack took place at the residence of Noor Alam Mehsud, a pro-government community leader in Dera Ismail Khan district, police said. Guests were dancing when the powerful blast caused the roof to collapse, scattering debris and hampering rescue efforts. Among the dead was a ‘good Talib’—a former militant who had surrendered to the state—and the rest were his relatives.

Authorities rushed the dead and injured to a nearby hospital, where several of the wounded were reported in critical condition. Security personnel cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to identify any accomplices, according to news agency AP.

Initial reports identified peace committee leader Waheedullah Mehsud, also known as Jigri Mehsud, among the deceased. No group has claimed responsibility, but the Pakistani Taliban (Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, TTP) is suspected. The TTP has been behind numerous attacks in Pakistan in recent years.

The incident follows a spate of attacks targeting peace committee members in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including four killed in Bannu district earlier this month and seven killed in a peace committee office attack in November 2025.
