Tripura lifts internet suspension in Kumarghat, security measures relaxed

Agartala, Jan 12: The district administration on Monday restored internet and mobile data services in Tripura’s Kumarghat subdivision of Unakoti district, as the situation improved following clashes earlier this week. The prohibitory order under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023 has been relaxed and is now limited to vulnerable areas around Fatikroy police station, officials said.

Unakoti District Magistrate Tamal Majumder confirmed that the internet suspension, imposed on Saturday after violence erupted, has been lifted. While the overall situation remains tense, it is largely peaceful in the mixed-population subdivision.

A senior police official stated that 11 individuals from both communities have been arrested in connection with the clashes, which began on January 10 over the collection of subscriptions for a local fair. Chief Minister and Home Minister Manik Saha reiterated that those taking the law into their own hands will face strict action.

According to police reports, trouble started when youths stopped a timber-laden vehicle at Saidarpar under Fatikroy police station limits, demanding contributions for a community fair. Tensions escalated after a minority family in Shimultala allegedly refused to pay, triggering a mob that set fire to several houses, vehicles, a timber shop, and vandalized a place of worship.

Security forces, including Assam Rifles, Tripura State Rifles (TSR), CRPF, and state police, were deployed immediately. Acting SP Avinash Rai, along with the District Magistrate and other officials, visited the affected areas to review arrangements and conduct regular patrolling. No new incidents have been reported since Saturday night.

Authorities also warned the public against spreading rumours or sharing fake photos and videos, urging residents to maintain peace while the district administration completes a detailed assessment of damages.

A CPI delegation visiting the area faced restrictions when attempting to interact with affected minority families, prompting allegations of obstruction by the administration.

The administration continues to monitor the situation closely, maintaining heightened vigilance in the area.
