New Delhi, Jan 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, emphasizing the resilience and ethos of Indian civilisation and remembering the countless children of Bharat Mata who never compromised on their principles.

The year-long celebrations commemorate the Somnath temple at Veraval, Gujarat, which was repeatedly destroyed by foreign invaders and rebuilt time and again by unwavering faith and civilisational spirit.

“Jai Somnath! Somnath Swabhiman Parv begins today. A thousand years ago, in January 1026, Somnath faced its first-ever attack. The attack of 1026 and the subsequent attacks couldn’t diminish the eternal faith of millions, nor break the civilisational spirit that rebuilt Somnath time and again,” Modi said in a post on X.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to participate in the celebrations at the temple on January 11. Sharing photographs from his previous visits, he urged followers to post their memories using the hashtag #SomnathSwabhimanParv.

Modi also recalled a programme held on October 31, 2001, marking 50 years since the rebuilt temple opened in 1951, in the presence of then-President Rajendra Prasad, highlighting contributions of Sardar Patel, K. M. Munshi and other leaders. He noted that the 2026 celebrations will mark 75 years since the grand ceremony of 1951, honoring the efforts that preserved the temple’s legacy.

The Somnath Swabhiman Parv stands as a tribute to the enduring faith, cultural ethos, and civilisational spirit of India.
