Dhaka, Jan 7: Violence targeting Hindu communities in Bangladesh continues unabated, with yet another tragic death reported in Mohadevpur Upazila of Naogaon district. Mithun Sarkar, a 25-year-old Hindu man, lost his life after jumping into a canal to escape a mob that accused him of robbery, local media reported.
According to reports from Daily Manobkantha, the incident occurred Tuesday afternoon in the Chakgori area. Witnesses said Mithun was being chased by locals when, in a desperate bid to save himself, he leapt into a deep canal. The strong current swept him away before emergency responders could reach him.
Police, the Fire Service, and Civil Defence teams launched a rescue operation, recovering Mithun’s body after several hours. Mohadevpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahidul Islam confirmed the incident, stating that the case is under serious investigation and further legal action will follow after autopsy results.
This marks the seventh reported attack on Hindus in just 19 days and the third incident this week, reflecting a disturbing rise in communal violence across Bangladesh.
The string of recent attacks includes:
• Sarat Chakraborty Mani (40), fatally attacked with sharp weapons in Narsingdi district on Monday night.
• Rana Pratap Bairagi (38), a Hindu businessman, shot dead in Monirampur Upazila of Jashore district within 24 hours of Mani’s killing.
• Khokon Chandra Das, brutally beaten to death by a mob in Damudya Upazila, Shariatpur district on Saturday.
• Bajendra Biswas (40), shot by a colleague in Bhaluka Upazila, Mymensingh district last week.
• Amrit Mondal (29), allegedly lynched in Hossaindanga area of Kalimohar Union on December 24.
• Dipu Chandra Das (25), lynched and publicly burned over false blasphemy accusations in Bhaluka Upazila on December 18.
Human rights organisations and citizens worldwide have expressed outrage over the escalating attacks, calling for stronger protection for minority communities. Observers note that these incidents have surged under the current interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, highlighting urgent concerns about communal safety and law enforcement in Bangladesh.
