Land use changes in Pernem spark row, MLA seeks rollback of zoning conversions

Daijiworld Media Network - Panaji

Panaji, Jan 7: Nearly 60 lakh square metres of land in Pernem have allegedly been reclassified under Sections 17(2) and 39A of the Town and Country Planning Act, triggering concerns over large-scale changes in land use. Pernem MLA Jit Arolkar has formally approached the government, calling for an immediate reversal of these conversions.

In his representation, Arolkar claimed that zoning regulations were altered for around 238 properties, many of which were reportedly purchased by non-Goans. He warned that such changes could have serious implications for local land rights and the demographic character of the region.

The issue has reignited debate over land ownership patterns and planning policies in Pernem, with fears that unchecked zoning modifications may marginalise local communities and pave the way for extensive outside control over land resources.
