Srinagar, Jan 6: In a significant crackdown on narcotics, Pulwama police in Jammu and Kashmir intercepted a truck carrying a large consignment of heroin worth lakhs of rupees, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The driver of the vehicle has been taken into custody.
According to a police statement, the operation took place during a routine naka check at Litter. “In a major success reflecting our ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking, Pulwama Police today stopped a truck and recovered a substantial quantity of heroin-like substance, valued in lakhs on the international market,” the statement said.

The truck, registered as JK22B-3175, was carrying 263 grams of the contraband. The driver, identified as Ather Maqbool Ganie, son of Moqbool Ahmad Ganie from Waghama in Bijbehara, was arrested on the spot. The vehicle has been seized and an FIR under Sections 8/21 of the NDPS Act has been registered. Police are investigating the source and intended destination of the drugs and are working to identify other individuals involved in the case.
Pulwama Police emphasized their commitment to eradicating drug trafficking and urged the public to assist by sharing any relevant information to help create a drug-free society.

Authorities are using de-addiction centers, counseling, and psychiatric care to support those affected, while social, political, and religious leaders work to prevent the spread of substance abuse among youth.

Data shared in Parliament reveals that nearly 10 lakh people in Jammu and Kashmir—around eight percent of the population—are affected by drug abuse.
