Veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja stable in ICU, hospital urges caution against rumours

Chennai, Jan 5: The health condition of acclaimed Tamil filmmaker and actor Bharathiraja remains stable after he was admitted to hospital following complaints of breathlessness, MGM Healthcare confirmed on Monday.

In an official medical update, the hospital said the veteran director is being treated for a severe lung infection and is currently under care in the Critical Care Unit. Doctors noted that he is receiving appropriate treatment for associated organ-related complications and is under continuous monitoring by a specialised medical team. While his condition is stable, the hospital said he will continue to require intensive care.

Amid widespread concern, several prominent figures from the Tamil film industry visited the hospital to enquire about Bharathiraja’s health. Among them were directors R K Selvamani, Seeman, Lingusamy, Ameer, A R Murugadoss and Seenu Ramasamy, along with producer-actor Chitra Laxmanan.

Speaking to the media after meeting the family and doctors, R K Selvamani said the visit was prompted by the circulation of misleading reports on social media and in sections of the media. He said doctors informed them that Bharathiraja is being treated in the ICU for pneumonia, that his vital organs are functioning normally, and that his overall condition is stable.

Selvamani added that doctors have restricted visitors after noting that a surge in hospital visits had aggravated the infection. “They are limiting access only to help him recover faster,” he said.

Appealing to the public, Selvamani urged fans and well-wishers not to spread unverified information. “Out of anxiety or ill intent, some people are spreading false news. If you truly care for him, please pray for his recovery and avoid sharing rumours,” he said. He also mentioned that the family and hospital have been requested to issue regular medical bulletins to prevent misinformation and reassure the public.
