Gurugram police deploy 5,400 personnel to ensure safe New Year’s Eve celebrations

Gurugram, Dec 31: To ensure smooth and hassle-free New Year’s Eve celebrations, the Gurugram Police have deployed 5,400 personnel across the district and warned of strict action against drunk driving and other violations.

Officials said notices have been issued to all pubs, bars, clubs, restaurants and hotels under Section 168 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), making establishments responsible for ensuring that intoxicated patrons do not drive. The police have directed that arrangements must be made by venues to safely transport drunk customers to their homes.

Apart from the large police deployment, counter-assault teams, police riders, PCR units, cranes, fire brigade staff and ambulance teams have been stationed at key locations with necessary safety equipment.

Heightened security has been put in place at major hotspots including MG Road, Cyber Hub, Golf Course Road, DLF Phase 1 and Sector 29 market. Additional forces have also been deployed at Galleria Market, South Point Mall, Good Earth Mall, Bristol Chowk and IFFCO Chowk.

The Gurugram Police have established 10 interstate checkpoints and 68 special checkpoints within the city, including 32 in the east zone, 21 in the west zone, eight in the south zone and seven in the Manesar zone. Special traffic police teams have been assigned to manage congestion and ensure smooth vehicular movement.

Special New Year events are scheduled at 22 major locations in Gurugram, besides celebrations at several other venues. To manage traffic around these areas, police have identified 10 designated parking locations near event venues. Partygoers’ vehicles will not be allowed on MG Road. Parking facilities have been arranged at Leisure Valley, areas opposite the Westin Hotel, Cyber Hub parking, locations opposite and behind KOD, near the Uber office in Sector 29, HUDA Gymkhana, Machan parking, HUDA ground parking and the taxi parking area in Sector 29.

In a traffic advisory, commuters have been instructed to park only at designated spots, warning that parking on roads will be strictly prohibited and illegally parked vehicles will be towed away.

DCP (Traffic) Rajesh Mohan said special teams will conduct checks across the city to curb drunk driving. He said that under the amended Motor Vehicles Act, drunk driving attracts a fine of Rs 10,000 and suspension of the driving licence for three months.

Gurugram Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora said police teams led by DCP- and ACP-rank officers will monitor sensitive areas throughout the celebrations. He warned that any attempt to disturb law and order or indulge in hooliganism will be dealt with strictly.
