Hyderabad, Dec 29: Tragedy struck two families in Telangana as Pulakhandam Meghana Rani (25) and Kadiyala Bhavana (24), both students from Mahabubabad district, died in a road accident in California, the United States.

The incident occurred on Alabama Hills road at around 4 p.m. local time on Sunday, while the students were on a leisure trip with friends. Traveling in a car with two others, the vehicle reportedly failed to negotiate a curve, veered off the road, and plunged into a valley. Meghana and Bhavana were killed on the spot, while the two other passengers sustained injuries.

Both students had completed their Masters in Computer Science from the University of Dayton, Ohio, and were reportedly seeking employment in the US. Meghana was from Garla village, where her father Nageshwara Rao runs a Mee-Seva centre, while Bhavana hailed from Mulkanoor village, with her father serving as the deputy sarpanch.

The families expressed shock and grief at the sudden loss, having hoped for their daughters’ safe settlement in the US. They have requested assistance from both the Centre and the Telangana government to repatriate the bodies for final rites.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the repatriation of Meghana’s remains. Described by friends and family as kind-hearted and vibrant, Meghana—affectionately called Chikki—was remembered for her generosity and warmth. The page appeals for contributions, emphasizing that even small donations will help the family provide a dignified farewell.

The accident has left a deep void in the lives of both families and the local communities in Mahabubabad.
