Gurgaon, Dec 28: A 22-year-old man arrested in a theft and house trespass case allegedly died by suicide while in police custody at Farrukhnagar near Gurgaon on Friday, prompting authorities to order a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

The deceased has been identified as Asif, a resident of Rampura in Rajasthan’s Bhiwadi. Police said he was arrested by the Farrukhnagar Crime Branch on December 26 from Farrukhnagar Mod and was kept at the Crime Branch office after his arrest.

According to the police, around 3.45 pm on Friday, Asif allegedly tore the cover of a quilt provided to him and used it to hang himself from the grill of a ventilator. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Following the incident, four police personnel from the Farrukhnagar Crime Branch were transferred to the Gurgaon District Police Lines on Saturday to ensure an “impartial investigation”, officials said.

A case has been registered against unknown persons based on a complaint filed by Asif’s family members. However, a Gurgaon Police spokesperson said that no evidence supporting the allegations made in the complaint has been presented so far.

“No evidence related to the allegations has emerged during the investigation being conducted by a judicial magistrate,” the spokesperson said, adding that the transfers were carried out purely in the interest of fairness.

Police also stated that the postmortem examination report has cited the cause of death as “hanging”.

According to police records, Asif had been booked in eight theft cases since 2022 — one in Delhi, three in Faridabad and four in Gurgaon district. He had also been convicted in four of these cases.
