Tripura assembly speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen passes away at 72

Agartala, Dec 26: Tripura Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen died on Friday at a private hospital in Bengaluru following a massive cerebral stroke, officials said. He was 72.

Sen, the MLA from Dharmanagar assembly constituency in North Tripura, had been undergoing treatment in the southern city. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled his death, recalling Sen’s contributions to Tripura’s development and his commitment to social causes. “Pained by the passing of Shri Biswa Bandhu Sen Ji, Speaker of the Tripura Assembly. He will be remembered for his efforts to boost Tripura's progress and commitment to numerous social causes. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti,” PM Modi said on X.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha also expressed grief over the demise, describing it as an irreparable loss to the party and extending condolences to the family and followers of Sen.

The state government announced a three-day mourning starting Friday and ordered the closure of all government offices, schools, colleges, and other educational institutions in his honor. Sen’s body is scheduled to be brought back to Tripura on Saturday.
