Panaji, Dec 25: A new dispute has surfaced over the handling of sanitary waste at the Sonsodo site, with Congress leader Savio Coutinho accusing the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) of improper disposal practices.
Coutinho alleged that instead of scientifically treating sanitary waste, the civic body is allegedly dumping it directly at the Sonsodo dumping ground. He warned that such actions could lead to serious environmental damage and pose risks to public health. According to him, concerns raised repeatedly by residents and opposition representatives have been consistently ignored by the authorities.

The MMC, however, has rejected the allegations outright. Margao municipal chairperson Damodar Shirodkar dismissed the claims and countered by accusing Coutinho of creating a disturbance at the site. Shirodkar alleged that the Congress leader tried to intimidate a JCB operator and behaved in a threatening manner, leading to heightened tension at the dumping yard.
The incident has further intensified the ongoing political tussle over waste management practices in Margao, with both sides trading accusations over responsibility and conduct.
