Srinagar, Dec 21: In a major security alert, Jammu (Rural) Police on Sunday recovered a Chinese-made telescope used for assault rifles from the Sidhra area near the headquarters of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Jammu.
According to police sources, the telescope — which can be mounted on a weapon — was found close to the security wing headquarters of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, triggering concern among security agencies. Soon after the recovery, senior police and security officials rushed to the spot and launched extensive search operations in the surrounding areas.
An investigation has been initiated to determine how the telescope reached the high-security zone and whether it is linked to any larger conspiracy. As a precautionary measure, security has been tightened across Jammu, especially around key government offices and military installations.
The recovery assumes significance as it comes just a week after the NIA filed a detailed 1,597-page chargesheet in connection with the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, naming seven accused, including four Pakistani nationals, Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba and its proxy group The Resistance Front (TRF).
The NIA is also currently probing other sensitive cases, including the November 10 Red Fort blast and the alleged ‘white-collar terror module’ involving medical professionals.
Authorities have not ruled out terror links and said further details will emerge as the investigation progresses.
