Calangute, Dec 21: Calangute police have registered a case against three individuals for allegedly operating illegal self-drive taxi services by using private vehicles and altering number plates to pose as authorised rent-a-cabs.

Police said the accused were running commercial taxi operations without obtaining the required permits, in violation of motor vehicle regulations. A case (Crime No. 173/2025) has been registered under the relevant provisions of law.

The action followed routine checks carried out by police in the Calangute area, during which the violations came to light. Officials noted that the accused had modified vehicle number plates to make private vehicles appear as commercial taxis.

Police officials said such illegal practices not only violate transport laws but also undermine legitimate taxi operators who comply with regulatory requirements.

Further investigation is underway to identify more offenders involved in similar activities and to ensure strict enforcement of transport and traffic laws, police added.
