Obama, Karzai Speak on Strategic Issues

Washington, Feb 21 (IANS): US President Barack Obama Monday spoke with his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai over the phone on an array of strategic issues.

"They discussed regional support for Afghan-led reconciliation, the Afghanistan-Pakistan-Iran trilateral meetings last week in Islamabad, and other strategic issues of mutual concern," Xinhua quoted a White House statement as saying.

"They agreed to speak again soon to remain closely aligned as both countries continue our efforts to achieve common goals, and work to forge a long-term partnership," the statement said.

US troops are scheduled to pull out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

In another statement, the White House said that Obama will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington March 5.
