Rishab Shetty faces backlash for wishing success to Darshan’s Devil amid ongoing murder case

Bengaluru, Dec 12: Just as the controversy over Ranveer Singh’s Kantara spoof began to settle, another storm has hit Sandalwood — this time involving Kantara creator and actor Rishab Shetty. His recent social media post wishing success to Darshan Thoogudeepa’s film The Devil has triggered strong criticism from netizens, given the ongoing murder case against the Challenging Star.

A day before the film’s release, Rishab took to social media to wish the team well, writing:
“Wishing @dasadarshan Sir and the entire team of Devil a blockbuster release! May the film set the screens on fire.”

The gesture, however, did not sit well with many online users, who felt that extending public support to Darshan — currently in custody for his alleged involvement in the murder of 33-year-old fan Renukaswamy — was inappropriate and insensitive.

Social media platforms soon flooded with sharp reactions. One user commented, “You are wishing a man of no values. A gentleman just ignores. This Darshan must be encountered.”

Another expressed disappointment, saying, “Total U-turn? What a shame that you are supporting and wishing a criminal in jail?”

Several users questioned the moral responsibility of influential personalities. “Sir, life is more about holding up your morals. This post doesn’t feel good,” wrote one user. “Why are you supporting a murderer?” asked another.

The backlash has reignited discussions on the responsibility of celebrities in shaping public perception, with many calling for stronger moral accountability from figures who command massive influence.

Meanwhile, Darshan’s highly anticipated action-thriller The Devil hit theatres today. Directed by Prakash Veer, the film features Rachana Rai, Mahesh Manjrekar and Achyuth Kumar in pivotal roles, with music composed by B. Ajaneesh Loknath. Marketed as a stylish, action-packed entertainer revolving around power, vengeance and love, the film opened amid heightened public scrutiny due to the ongoing case against its lead actor.
