Veteran actor Prem Chopra undergoes TAVI procedure for severe aortic stenosis at 90

Mumbai, Dec 10: Renowned Bollywood veteran Prem Chopra (90) has undergone a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure after being diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis, a heart valve condition that restricts blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body.

The update regarding the legendary actor’s health was shared by his son-in-law and actor Sharman Joshi through a social media post, confirming that Chopra is recovering well after the minimally-invasive heart procedure.

Aortic stenosis affects the aortic valve, causing it to narrow and obstruct blood circulation to the aorta — the primary artery supplying blood to vital organs. According to cardiologists, the condition often results from age-related calcification of valve leaflets, leading to breathlessness, chest pain, fainting spells and, if left untreated, potential heart failure.

Medical experts explain that elderly patients like Prem Chopra benefit greatly from TAVI, which avoids the risks associated with open-heart surgery. “TAVI is performed by accessing the heart through a blood vessel in the leg, allowing faster recovery and reduced complications,” doctors noted.

For a star who has entertained audiences for over six decades with iconic roles, the timely treatment brings relief to family, colleagues, and countless fans across India.
