Varanasi, Dec 7: Bhelupur police on Saturday arrested a cricket coach on charges of sodomising two boys, aged 14 and 15, after allegedly luring them with promises of free coaching and team selection at various competitive levels.

Police said the coach, identified as Murarilal alias Gautam (45), ran training centres on the premises of an educational institution and another facility at Seer Gowardhanpur. The case came to light when one of the minors developed health complications and informed his parents of the assault. On contacting other students, another boy reported similar abuse, following which a complaint was lodged on Friday.

ACP Gaurav Kumar said the accused was arrested within 24 hours of registration of the FIR. During interrogation, he confessed to exploiting several boys in the past and was previously jailed in a similar case filed at the Lanka police station in 2021.

Investigations revealed that Murarilal, a native of Miraban under Jansa police limits, had sold his family property in 2016 and later set up coaching centres in Seer Gowardhanpur. Police said he targeted adolescent trainees by offering free coaching and false assurances of selection.

The accused was presented before the media on Saturday. Further investigation is underway.
