New York, Dec 2: Following severe winter weather in the Midwest, the East Coast is preparing for its first major storm of the season, bringing snow, freezing rain, and hazardous driving conditions.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency Monday for parts of the state, including Hunterdon, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, and Warren counties, as 3 to 7 inches of snow were forecast. “I urge all drivers to exercise caution, remain alert, and follow all safety protocols,” Murphy said.

The National Weather Service warned of a wintry mix in New York City, rain with scattered snow in Philadelphia, up to 6 inches in Pennsylvania’s Poconos, and freezing rain in parts of Maryland. Syracuse and Albany could see more than 5 inches, while Buffalo and surrounding areas may receive 3 to 4 inches or more. Northwestern Ohio is expected to get 2 to 5 inches of snow starting Monday night.
The storm follows post-Thanksgiving winter weather that disrupted roads and schools across the Plains and Midwest. In Missouri, Kansas City Public Schools closed Tuesday due to unsafe roads after heavy snowfall, with nearly all northern state roads covered. The Nebraska State Patrol cautioned that this was “just our first blast” of winter, urging residents to stay prepared.
With 72 million people from Missouri and Arkansas to Maine under winter weather advisories, authorities continue to warn of treacherous conditions as the storm moves east into the Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes regions.
