Curtorim woman loses Rs 1 lac to fake Parivahan app scam

Daijiworld Media Network – Margao

Margao, Nov 27: A woman from Curtorim lost Rs 1 lakh in a cyber fraud after unknowingly installing a fake Parivahan app through a malicious link sent to her phone.

According to a complaint lodged at the Maina-Curtorim police station, Latoya Krita Sequeira Carvalho stated that on September 20, her husband had forwarded an APK link claiming to be for the official Parivahan application — the government’s transport services portal. Believing it to be genuine, she clicked the link and installed the app.

Soon after, an unidentified cyber fraudster gained remote access to her mobile phone and carried out unauthorised transactions from her bank accounts. The fraudster siphoned off Rs 50,000 from her Bank of Baroda savings account and another Rs 50,000 from her State Bank of India account. Police said the stolen money was used to buy Amazon Pay gift vouchers.

Maina-Curtorim police have registered a case under Sections 318(4) and 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 66-D of the IT (Amendment) Act, 2008.
