Railways says no official provision for halal food in trains

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi

New Delhi, Nov 26: The Railway Board has clarified that there is no official provision for serving Halal-certified food on Indian trains.

The statement came in response to a notice from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) concerning a complaint that alleged Indian Railways serves only halal-processed meat in non-vegetarian meals, causing discrimination and human-rights concerns.

A senior Railway Board official said Indian Railways and IRCTC follow the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) guidelines for all food products. The official emphasized that there is no policy to provide Halal-certified meals, and no records or approvals exist for such a provision.

The issue had also been raised recently under the Right to Information Act before the Chief Information Commission (CIC), which recorded the Railways’ stance that no Halal-certified food is served on trains. Officials reiterated that Indian Railways maintains food practices in compliance with all regulatory norms.
