PM Modi urges citizens to uphold constitutional duties on Constitution Day

New Delhi, Nov 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a special letter marking Constitution Day, called upon citizens to place their Constitutional duties at the heart of national life, describing them as the cornerstone of a strong and vibrant democracy.

Modi highlighted the importance of responsibly exercising the right to vote, urging schools and colleges across the country to honour first-time voters turning 18. Such initiatives, he said, would deepen democratic participation and nurture a generation committed to nation-building.

Invoking Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy, the prime minister noted that rights naturally flow from the fulfilment of duties, a principle that has guided India’s social and economic progress. He also paid tribute to Rajendra Prasad, B. R. Ambedkar, members of the Constituent Assembly, and freedom struggle icons Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Birsa Munda and Gandhi.

Referring to Article 51A, Modi underscored that the chapter on Fundamental Duties provides a roadmap for collective advancement. “Every action of ours should strengthen the Constitution and further national goals,” he wrote.

The prime minister recalled how Sardar Patel’s leadership shaped India’s political integration, adding that the government drew inspiration from him while revoking Articles 370 and 35(A) to extend full constitutional rights to Jammu & Kashmir, particularly women and marginalised communities.

Modi also highlighted Birsa Munda’s enduring legacy, saying the tribal leader’s sacrifices continue to inspire India’s commitment to justice and empowerment for tribal communities.

Reminding citizens of their responsibility to vote in every election for which they are registered, Modi proposed annual ceremonies on November 26 to celebrate students who reach voting age.

In a personal reflection, he said the Constitution had enabled someone from a humble background like him to serve as the nation’s leader for over 24 years. He recalled bowing at the steps of Parliament in 2014 and touching the Constitution to his forehead in 2019—gestures of his unwavering respect for the document.

“Our Constitution gives utmost importance to human dignity, equality and liberty,” Modi posted on X. “It empowers us with rights and reminds us of our duties. These duties are the foundation of a strong democracy.”
