Congress recalls Ambedkar’s historic draft constitution resolution, alleges continued RSS opposition

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi

New Delhi, Nov 25: The Congress on Tuesday marked the 76th anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar moving the resolution for the formal adoption of the Draft Constitution in the Constituent Assembly, recalling his pivotal role and asserting that both Ambedkar and the Constitution had faced a “ferocious assault” from the RSS since that time.

Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh, in a detailed post, highlighted that Ambedkar’s closing speech while moving the resolution remained “one of the greatest ever delivered in the 20th century”. He noted that Ambedkar had openly appreciated the Congress for ensuring stability and order during the drafting process.

Ramesh quoted Ambedkar’s remarks praising the Congress for preventing chaos within the Assembly. Ambedkar had said the proceedings would have been extremely difficult “if the Constituent Assembly had been merely a motley crowd” lacking unity. He credited the Congress for the discipline that enabled the Drafting Committee to steer the Constitution confidently through debates and amendments.

The Congress leader further alleged that soon after the Constitution was adopted, both Ambedkar and the document itself came under severe attack from the RSS — an opposition he claimed “has continued since”.

Since 2015, November 26 has been observed as Constitution Day or Samvidhan Diwas to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution in 1949.
