Hook step sparks uproar: Diljit Dosanjh’s ‘Kufur’ caught in fresh controversy

Mumbai, Nov 20: Nearly a month after its release, Diljit Dosanjh’s chart-topping single Kufur, featuring Manushi Chhillar, has found itself in the middle of a heated online storm over an alleged “vulgar” hook step. A segment where Diljit stands behind a woman who lifts her leg to the line “jannat ke darwaaze kudiye” triggered a wave of criticism, with a section of viewers slamming it as “objectification.”

As the debate intensified, the song’s choreographers, Shazia Samji and Piyush Bhagat, broke their silence in a conversation with Hindi Rush, clarifying that the team was specifically briefed to create a “sexy, international-style” dance sequence. They maintained that both Diljit and Manushi were fully aware of the choreography and executed it as planned.

Shazia described the controversial moment as one of their favourite portions of the song, stating that the line itself carried a strong hook that was bound to connect with audiences. Piyush added that filmmaking and choreography are collaborative processes, and every member on set—from the DOP to the dancers and stars—was aware of how the sequence was designed. He emphasised that Kufur was conceived as a glamorous global track, fitting for an artist like Diljit, who enjoys international stardom.

The duo reiterated that the teaser clearly described the number as a “sexy dance,” and insisted that there was nothing objectionable in its execution. They said that while some viewers may perceive it differently, discussions—whether positive or negative—only reflect the attention the song has generated.

Amid the controversy, Manushi Chhillar shared cryptic posts on X. In one of them, she urged people not to disrespect the background dancer involved in the hook step, saying the performer was simply doing her job. In another post, she spoke about shooting the song shortly after recovering from the flu, admitting she hadn’t felt fully prepared but gained confidence from the team’s support.

Diljit, during a light-hearted interaction with fans, brushed off the criticism, quipping that he was merely standing there during the shot and had “no idea what was happening around” him.

Despite the chatter, Kufur continues to dominate digital platforms and has already crossed 2.9 crore views on YouTube, proving that the buzz—controversial or otherwise—has only amplified its reach.
