Dhaka, Nov 13: Bangladesh is grappling with a rapidly worsening dengue outbreak, with both infections and fatalities surging across the country. In the past 24 hours, three more people have died, raising the death toll from the mosquito-borne disease to 326, local media reported.

During the same period, 833 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals, bringing the total number of cases in 2025 to 82,606, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The recent deaths were reported in Dhaka North City Corporation (1), Dhaka South City Corporation (1), and Rajshahi division (1).

Currently, 1,063 patients are being treated in Dhaka hospitals, while 3,332 patients are hospitalized nationwide. Among this year’s patients, 62.4% are men and 37.6% are women, while among the fatalities, 53.1% were male and 46.9% female. For comparison, 575 people died from dengue in Bangladesh in 2024.

DGHS Director General Abu Jafor noted that while the number of dengue cases this year is higher than in 2024, the death rate relative to infections is lower. Speaking at a press briefing on the Typhoid Vaccination Campaign 2025, he stressed the importance of mosquito control, destruction of larvae, and preventive measures such as using mosquito nets.

Abu Jafor also highlighted that over 50% of dengue deaths in hospitals occur on the first day of admission, indicating delayed medical care. He emphasized that early diagnosis is critical, as dengue can often be managed at home with timely medical attention. He cited lack of awareness, negligence, and delayed treatment as key factors behind the rising death toll.

The DGHS continues to urge the public to take individual precautions seriously to curb the outbreak and protect vulnerable populations.
