Guwahati, Nov 13: In a major political development ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the Congress party has joined hands with seven other regional and Left parties to form a united anti-BJP front, vowing to “liberate Assam from corruption, misrule, and oppression” under the current government.
The eight-party alliance includes the Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM), Communist Party of India (CPI), CPI (Marxist), CPI (Marxist-Leninist), and the All-Party Hill Leaders’ Conference.

Announcing the decision after a two-hour meeting in Guwahati on Wednesday evening (Nov 12), Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and MP Gaurav Gogoi said all parties had reached a consensus to form a strong front against the BJP and its allies.
“We have decided to unite to free the people of Assam from the misrule, corruption, and oppression of the current government,” Gogoi stated, adding that further meetings would be held soon to chalk out a joint election strategy.
AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh, in charge of Assam, said the alliance was formed with the firm goal of removing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from power.
“We have pledged to form a new people’s government in Assam by uniting against the injustices of the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government,” Singh said.
The meeting was attended by several prominent leaders including MLA Akhil Gogoi (Raijor Dal), MLA Manoranjan Talukdar (CPI-M), Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan (AGM), and Lurinjyoti Gogoi (AJP).
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma downplayed the opposition’s move, terming it a “repeated political drama.”
“Such meetings and quarrels among themselves are common. We have been watching this TV serial for the last four and a half years. As elections approach, more such shows will follow,” he remarked.
Sarma further questioned the need for frequent meetings, saying alliances could be discussed “over the phone” and that opposition leaders only convene such gatherings “to make news.”
This marks the second attempt by the Congress to build a grand opposition alliance in Assam. The earlier ‘Mahajot’ (Grand Alliance), formed ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections, had collapsed following its poor performance at the polls.
