New Delhi, Nov 11: A day after Congress MP Shashi Tharoor lauded BJP veteran L K Advani on his 98th birthday, calling him a “true statesman” known for his modesty and contribution to India’s political journey, the Congress party on Sunday distanced itself from the remarks.
Without naming Tharoor directly, Congress said his views were personal. “Like always, Dr Shashi Tharoor speaks for himself and the Indian National Congress outrightly dissociates itself from his most recent statement,” Congress media department head Pawan Khera said in a post on X.

Tharoor had on Saturday described Advani’s “unwavering commitment to public service” and “role in shaping modern India” as indelible. Reacting to criticism over his remarks, the Thiruvananthapuram MP said that just as Nehru and Indira Gandhi’s legacies are not defined by single controversies, the same fairness should apply to Advani.
L K Advani, a founding member of the BJP and architect of the party’s rise in the 1990s through the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, was conferred the Bharat Ratna in 2024 for his lifelong contribution to Indian politics.
