New Delhi, Nov 7: A major tragedy was averted in the national capital on Thursday evening after a Mercedes car suddenly caught fire at a traffic signal near Tara Apartment crossing. A 38-year-old woman and her five-year-old child, who were inside the vehicle, were rescued safely by alert Delhi Police personnel.

The incident occurred around 5:30 pm when the car, waiting at a red light, suddenly went up in flames. Witnesses said smoke began to rise from the engine before the fire rapidly spread to other parts of the vehicle.

According to officials, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ratan Lal Meena, Constable Rahul, and a traffic police officer stationed nearby acted swiftly, rushing to pull the woman and her child out of the burning car. The team immediately alerted the Delhi Jal Board, which dispatched a water tanker to the scene. Together, the police and tanker crew managed to extinguish the blaze and prevent further damage to nearby vehicles.

The woman expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Delhi Police, saying that their timely action saved her and her child’s lives. “If the police had not arrived on time, something terrible could have happened,” she said.

The South-East District Police commended the “bravery” and “promptness” of the officers involved, noting that their quick response prevented a potential disaster in one of Delhi’s busiest stretches.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, which is suspected to have been triggered by a technical malfunction in the luxury vehicle.
