Haridwar, Nov 7: In a tragic incident, a chemical engineer allegedly ended his life by locking himself inside a smoke-filled room after suffering heavy losses in the stock market and facing a property dispute, police said on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Love Kumar, a resident of Arihant Vihar area in Haridwar. According to police, Kumar ended his life on Wednesday by burning coal on a heater in his room and sealing it from inside, leading to death by asphyxiation.

Senior Sub-Inspector Satyendra Bhandari of Kankhal Police Station said a suicide note was recovered from the spot, in which Kumar stated that financial hardship and property issues had driven him to take the extreme step.

Before taking the step, Kumar reportedly sent a WhatsApp message to his wife, threatening to end his life by carbon monoxide poisoning. Police said Kumar had been under severe mental stress due to continuous losses in stock trading and had turned to alcohol. Troubled by his drinking habit, his wife had recently moved to her parents’ home with their children.

After receiving the WhatsApp message, Kumar’s wife tried to contact him multiple times. When he failed to respond, his family members rushed to the house and alerted the police.

Upon breaking open the door, police found the room filled with thick smoke, and Kumar was lying unconscious. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Further investigation is underway, police said.
