Udupi, Nov 3: A cow fell into an open pit dug for the Varahi water pipeline project near Patil Cloth Store at Parkala in Udupi on Sunday, causing concern among local residents.
According to sources, the cow accidentally slipped into the large pit located beside the busy national highway junction. The incident occurred due to the absence of any safety barricades or warning signs around the excavation site.
Locals immediately rushed to the spot and attempted to rescue the animal but were unable to pull it out on their own. Later, a JCB machine was brought in, and after several efforts, the cow was safely lifted from the pit.

Residents expressed strong dissatisfaction with the negligence of the authorities, stating that the pit had been left open for over two months without any protective measures. They alleged that despite repeated complaints, the concerned department has failed to take steps to cover or secure the site, posing danger to both people and animals.
Locals have urged officials to take immediate action to close the pit and ensure safety measures are implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
