New Delhi, Oct 26: The Government of India is taking decisive steps to position the nation as a global powerhouse in next-generation communication technologies, official data revealed on Sunday.

Building on the rapid success of 5G deployment, the government is now turning its attention to the future of connectivity through its ambitious “Bharat 6G Vision”, a roadmap to make India a hub of telecom innovation by 2030.

According to the government, the 6G mission rests on three key pillars — affordability, sustainability, and universal access — ensuring that high-speed internet and advanced digital services reach every citizen. The initiative also aligns with India’s long-term goal of achieving a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) by 2047.

Sixth-generation (6G) technology, the successor to 5G, promises speeds up to 1,000 times faster and near-zero latency, paving the way for real-time breakthroughs in remote healthcare, advanced robotics, smart cities, and immersive virtual reality.

To drive innovation in this space, the government has launched multiple initiatives, including two state-of-the-art research facilities — the 6G Terahertz (THz) Testbed and the Advanced Optical Communication Testbed — designed to accelerate cutting-edge telecom research.

Further, 100 dedicated 5G labs have been established across universities and technical institutes to nurture collaboration between academia and industry while preparing the groundwork for 6G advancements.

So far, 104 research proposals focused on 6G network ecosystems have received approval, aligning India’s R&D efforts with international standards and the global 6G roadmap.

To boost domestic innovation, the government has also operationalized the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF), aimed at supporting indigenous research and startups in telecom technologies. Under this initiative, 115 projects worth over Rs 310 crore have been sanctioned, targeting both 5G and 6G development.

A cornerstone of this vision is the formation of the Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA) — a collaborative platform bringing together government agencies, industry leaders, academic institutions, and research bodies. The alliance seeks to create a self-reliant and globally competitive ecosystem that can shape the future of advanced telecom technologies from within India.
